However, the conventional artificial lens provides a single fixed focus. It cannot give far distance focus one moment and near focus the next, like the eyes natural lens does in a young person. Thus, after cataract surgery, eye glasses are still needed in order to shift the focus of your eye from far away to close up.\n\nWhile we're young, the focusing muscles inside our eye can change and control the shape of our natural lens. This change in shape allows us to shift our focus from far away to close up. And this natural focusing ability is called accommodation. Unfortunately, the natural lens hardens as we age.\n\nAnd as it loses flexibility, we lose our accommodation. The term used to describe this natural and unavoidable loss of far to near focusing ability is presbyopia by our 40s. Our diminishing ability to focus close must be replaced with reading glasses, bifocals or trifocals. Conventional artificial lens implants do not correct presbyopia because they cannot replace the need for reading glasses either.\n\nThe cornea is the clear front window of the eye and should be perfectly round like the shape of a doorknob, astigmatism means that the cornea is slightly oval in shape, like the back of a spoon. If the cornea has significant astigmatism, then details, such as print or street signs will appear blurred without glasses. Class optically correct this blur by compensating for the Oval shape of the cornea. The more astigmatism one has, the blurry or the vision is without eyeglasses.\n\nA astigmatism correction can also be incorporated into the artificial limb that is implanted at the time of cataract surgery. This is called a Torick lens implant, and it must be positioned in a specific orientation in order to neutralize the astigmatism from the cornea. The Torick lens implant does not allow you to both read and see far away without eyeglasses, it may not necessarily correct. All of your astigmatism either.\n\nHowever, compared to a conventional lens implant that does not correct astigmatism, the Torick lens implant should improve how well you see, without glasses and any eyeglasses that you do require should be less strong. Your health insurance covers the costs of cataract surgery with a conventional lens implant. However, the additional charge for implanting special premium artificial lenses to reduce the need to wear eyeglasses is not covered. And must be paid out of pocket by the patient.\n\nRemember that the benefit of these special premium lens implants is to reduce the inconvenience of having to wear eyeglasses as often after surgery. They are not medically necessary because they have nothing to do with improving your health. Fortunately, patients undergoing cataract surgery today have more advanced options than ever before."}],"embed_options":{"volumeControl":"true","fullscreenButton":"true","controlsVisibleOnLoad":"true","playerColor":"000000","bpbTime":"false","plugin":{"captions-v1":{"language":"","onByDefault":"false","on":"true","async":"false"}},"vulcan":true,"branding":"false","showCustomerLogo":"false","thumbnailAltText":"About Toric Lens implants","audioDescriptionControl":"false"},"embedOptions":{"volumeControl":"true","fullscreenButton":"true","controlsVisibleOnLoad":"true","playerColor":"000000","bpbTime":"false","plugin":{"captions-v1":{"language":"","onByDefault":"false","on":"true","async":"false"}},"vulcan":true,"branding":"false","showCustomerLogo":"false","thumbnailAltText":"About Toric Lens implants","audioDescriptionControl":"false"}},"options":{}};
